The week
from August 17 to 21, 2026, witnessed several important developments in India’s
financial and investment markets. The new initiatives being undertaken by the
Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) to expand mutual fund
participation, the growth in output of key industries, and banks’ efforts to
raise funds from overseas markets were among the major developments of the
week.
At the same
time, Indian stock markets witnessed a modest decline, while gold, silver and
crude oil prices rose significantly. Therefore, investors need to look beyond
short-term market movements and pay attention to developments across different
parts of the economy.
New
Initiatives to Expand Mutual Fund Participation
The
Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), under its ‘Mutual Funds Sahi Hai’
investor awareness campaign, has announced new initiatives aimed at bringing
more women, first-time investors, people from smaller cities and underserved
sections of society into mutual fund investing.
As part of
these initiatives, around 10,000 mutual fund distributors will be covered
through training and awareness programmes. In addition, around 500 awareness
programmes are expected to reach nearly 25,000 people.
The key
objective is to improve investment awareness and help people with limited
knowledge of mutual funds understand the basics of investing in a simple
manner. Increasing the participation of women and first-time investors could
play an important role in the long-term development of India’s investment
market.
Women’s participation
in mutual funds has already increased significantly. According to AMFI data,
women accounted for 24.2 per cent of individual mutual fund investors in
December 2024. The mutual fund assets held by women increased from ₹4.59 lakh
crore in March 2019 to ₹11.25 lakh crore in March 2024.
AMFI has
also been continuously conducting investor awareness programmes. During the
financial year ended March 31, 2025, AMFI conducted 306 awareness programmes
that reached 68,325 people. Mutual fund companies conducted 14,749 programmes
across the country and reached more than 11.48 lakh people.
Therefore,
the objective should not be merely to increase the number of investors, but
also to improve their understanding of investments and financial planning.
Key Industries
Record 5.4% Growth
India’s core
industries recorded growth of 5.4 per cent in July 2026. Although this was
slightly lower than the 6 per cent growth recorded in June, the data indicates
that overall industrial activity continues to expand.
During the
first four months from April to July, the cumulative growth of the core
industries stood at 4.3 per cent, compared with just 1.5 per cent during the
corresponding period of the previous year.
Iron ore
production increased by 29.5 per cent, cement production by 13.1 per cent,
electricity generation by 9 per cent and coal production by 7.6 per cent.
Production of refined petroleum products also increased by 2.7 per cent. On the
other hand, natural gas, crude oil and fertiliser production witnessed declines.
Nine Core
Industries Under the Revised Index
From July
2026, iron ore has been included in the revised calculation of the core
industries index. Therefore, the index now covers nine core industries.
These are
coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement,
electricity and iron ore.
For
investors, the strong performance of sectors such as infrastructure,
construction, mining and electricity is a positive indication for economic
activity. However, the decline in crude oil, natural gas and fertiliser
production remains an area that needs to be monitored.
Banks Get
Greater Flexibility to Raise Overseas Funds
Another
important development of the week was the decision by ICICI Bank’s board to
approve an overseas borrowing limit of up to $5 billion.
The earlier
limit was $2.5 billion, which has now been doubled. The approval allows the
bank to raise funds in international markets through instruments such as bonds,
notes and offshore certificates of deposit.
This does
not necessarily mean that the bank’s profits will immediately increase. Rather,
it gives the bank greater financial flexibility to raise funds from
international markets whenever required.
International
interest rates, currency movements and the cost of borrowing will play an
important role in determining the attractiveness and cost of such overseas
fund-raising.
Market
Performance During the Week
Compared
with August 14, the major market indices recorded declines by August 21.

Strong Rise
in Gold and Silver
One of the
biggest movements during the week was seen in gold and silver prices.
The price of
999-purity gold for 10 grams increased from ₹1,52,363 to ₹1,60,620,
representing a rise of 5.42 per cent.
Similarly,
the price of 999-purity silver increased from ₹2,33,842 per kilogram to
₹2,46,630, registering a rise of 5.47 per cent.
During such
periods, investor interest in gold and silver naturally tends to increase.
However, making a large one-time investment in gold or silver merely because
prices have risen sharply in a single week may not be an appropriate strategy.
Investment
decisions should instead be based on an investor’s overall asset allocation,
investment horizon and risk tolerance.
Impact of
Rising Crude Oil Prices
WTI crude
oil prices increased by 5.90 per cent during the week to $86.34 a barrel.
Since India
imports a significant portion of its crude oil requirements, a sustained rise
in crude oil prices could affect the country’s import bill, inflation, currency
value and the profitability of certain companies.
Therefore,
investors need to watch whether the rise in crude oil prices is temporary or
whether it develops into a sustained trend.
What Should
Investors Do?
The
developments during the week offer an important lesson to investors.
The stock
market may decline slightly while gold and silver rise. Industrial growth may
remain strong while certain sectors experience a decline in production.
Therefore, making investment decisions based only on the events of a particular
week can be risky.
Long-term
investors should maintain their asset allocation based on their financial
goals, investment horizon and risk tolerance. For equity investors, disciplined
approaches such as systematic investment plans, or SIPs, can help reduce the
impact of short-term market volatility.
Mutual funds
are not guaranteed investments like bank deposits. Returns from market-linked
mutual fund schemes are not guaranteed. Therefore, instead of selecting a
scheme solely based on its past returns, investors should consider its
investment objective, risk level, expense ratio, investment horizon and
suitability for their financial goals.
AMFI also
emphasises that mutual fund investments are subject to market risks and that
past performance does not guarantee future returns.
Conclusion
The week
from August 17 to 21 presented a mixed set of signals for investors.
Indian stock
markets declined moderately, while gold and silver recorded strong gains. The
5.4 per cent growth in core industries was a positive indication of continued
economic activity. At the same time, weakness in certain sectors needs to be
monitored.
AMFI’s
efforts to expand mutual fund participation among women, first-time investors
and people from smaller cities could contribute to the next phase of India’s investment
culture.
Therefore,
instead of focusing only on how much the market has risen or fallen in a
particular week, long-term investors should consider the broader picture,
including economic
growth, inflation, interest rates, crude oil prices, gold prices, the value of
the rupee and corporate earnings growth.
A
disciplined, diversified and goal-based investment approach is generally more
important than reacting to short-term market movements.
