The
Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), in association with CRISIL, has
released the “AMFI–CRISIL
Factbook 2026”, a comprehensive report that provides important
data and insights into the growth of India’s mutual fund industry.
The Factbook
covers several key aspects, including the growth of mutual fund assets, the
number of investors, Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) investments and changing
investment trends in India.
Mutual Fund AUM Reaches
₹73.73 Lakh Crore
At the end
of the financial year 2025-26, the total assets under management (AUM) of
India’s mutual fund industry stood at ₹73.73
lakh crore.
The
industry’s AUM was ₹65.74 lakh crore in March 2025. This represents significant
growth over a one-year period, highlighting the increasing acceptance of mutual
funds among Indian investors.
Number of Mutual Fund
Investors Rises
The number
of mutual fund investors has also continued to increase steadily.
The number
of unique investors rose from 5.36
crore in March 2025 to 6.14 crore in March 2026. This means
that around 78 lakh new
investors entered the mutual fund industry in just one year.
This
increase reflects the growing awareness of market-linked investment products
among households across the country.
Strong Growth in SIP
Investments
The Factbook
also highlights the growing popularity of Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) among
Indian investors.
Monthly SIP
contributions increased from ₹25,926
crore to ₹32,087 crore, representing growth of around 24%.
The
continued growth in SIP investments indicates that more investors are adopting
a disciplined approach to long-term investing by investing a fixed amount at
regular intervals.
Mutual Fund Investments Spread
Beyond Major Cities
Mutual fund
investing is no longer limited to large metropolitan cities.
The Factbook
highlights the increasing participation of investors from smaller cities, emerging towns and
rural areas. Greater financial awareness, the growing
popularity of SIPs and the availability of digital investment platforms have
contributed to this wider participation.
The
expansion of digital investment facilities has also made it easier for
investors across different parts of the country to access mutual fund products.
Significant Opportunity for
Further Growth
There is
still considerable scope for the mutual fund industry to expand in India.
The ratio of
mutual fund AUM to India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased from 15.9% in FY2021 to 21.3% in FY2026.
However,
mutual fund penetration in India remains relatively low compared with developed
markets. This indicates significant potential for the industry to attract more
first-time investors and increase household participation in financial markets.
Mutual Funds Becoming an
Important Part of Household Savings
Overall, the
AMFI–CRISIL Factbook
2026 provides a clear picture of how Indian household savings
are increasingly finding their way into market-linked investment products.
The rising
number of investors, strong growth in SIP contributions and increasing
participation from smaller cities and rural areas demonstrate that retail
investors are becoming an important growth engine for India’s mutual fund
industry.
With
financial awareness continuing to improve and digital investment platforms
becoming more accessible, the Indian mutual fund industry has considerable
potential for further growth in the years ahead.
