Free Entry: Puducherry MSMEs, Are You Ready to Export? An Export Readiness
Awareness Programme in October 2026!
“Our product has a good response in the
local market. What if we sell it in overseas markets too?”
asked Arun, who runs a small manufacturing business in Puducherry, one day.
“Isn’t exporting only for large
companies?” his friend asked.
“Not necessarily. With the right
product and a proper understanding of export procedures, even micro, small and
medium enterprises can explore overseas markets,” Arun replied.
Today,
overseas markets offer a new opportunity for micro, small and medium
enterprises (MSMEs) that have traditionally depended only on domestic markets.
However, having a quality product alone is not enough. A business must also
understand export documentation, market selection, pricing, packaging,
transportation and methods of receiving payments from overseas buyers.
Why Is
Export Readiness Important?
Before
selling a product in an overseas market, a business must identify the countries
where there is demand for its product. It is essential to study customer
preferences, competitors’ prices, quality requirements and import regulations
in the target country.
For example,
a product that sells well in India may not necessarily succeed in another
country in exactly the same form. Customer expectations regarding size, design,
packaging and quality may be different.
Therefore,
instead of thinking, “We
have manufactured the product; now we can export it,”
businesses should first find answers to questions such as:
Which
market should we target? Which product should we export? At what price? And
what regulations do we need to comply with?

Awareness
Programme for Small Businesses
Against this
background, an “Export
Readiness Awareness Programme” is being organised for MSMEs.
The objective is to create basic awareness among businesses about export
opportunities and the preparations required to enter international markets.
This could
be a useful opportunity for entrepreneurs in Puducherry and its surrounding
regions. In particular, it may help businesses that are thinking, “We want to sell our products
overseas, but we do not know where to start,” understand the
basic export process.

Exporting:
The Next Step Towards Growth!
The growth
of an MSME does not have to stop with increasing domestic sales. With the right
preparation, businesses can also explore overseas markets and potentially
expand their sales opportunities.
However,
rather than making hurried decisions, businesses should develop a clear
understanding of export regulations, target markets, costs, quality
requirements and payment procedures before entering international trade.
For MSMEs
looking for an answer to the question, “Can
we take our product to the global market?”, an export readiness
awareness programme can be a useful starting point.
