"Stay
Disciplined Amid Volatility – Earnings Recovery Remains the Key Theme"
Indian
equity markets continue to navigate a volatile global environment driven by
geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, elevated crude oil prices, and
uncertainty in global markets.
Despite
these short-term concerns, both Franklin Templeton and Kotak Mutual
Fund maintain a constructive medium- to long-term outlook on Indian
equities, supported by improving corporate earnings and resilient domestic
fundamentals.

India's foreign exchange reserves rose to 692.9 Billion $. The

drive launced by RBI in June to bolster the country's balance of payments.

deposits raised by banks through July month. |
Why the Outlook Remains Positive
1. India's Economic Resilience
- Domestic demand
continues to remain healthy despite geopolitical uncertainties.
- RBI measures
supporting FCNR(B) deposits and ECB inflows are expected to strengthen
liquidity and India's external position.
- The current
spike in crude oil prices appears largely geopolitical rather than
structural, suggesting prices could normalize if tensions ease.
2. Earnings Recovery is Underway
Corporate
earnings have begun improving after nearly two subdued years.
Key
observations include:
- Nifty earnings
are expected to grow at mid-teen levels over FY27–FY28.
- Excluding Oil
& Gas, earnings growth is even stronger.
- Mid and
small-cap companies continue to report superior earnings growth driven by
domestic demand.
3. Attractive Valuation Setup
- Nifty valuations
are close to historical averages.
- India's
valuation premium over other Emerging Markets has moderated.
- While large caps
appear reasonably valued, mid and small caps continue to trade at premium
valuations, requiring selective investing.
August 2026 Equity Outlook
Update
Key Takeaways
-
Near-term volatility persists due to Middle East tensions and crude oil above
USD100, but the medium-term outlook for Indian equities remains constructive.
- Earnings recovery is broadening with Q1 Nifty earnings around 11% YoY;
broader markets are growing faster.
- India's external position has improved through FCNR(B) and liquidity
measures, reducing currency risks.
- Preferred sectors: Banking & Financials, Industrials, Capital Goods,
Healthcare (Hospitals), Capital Markets and selective Metals.
- Allocation: Neutral on Large Caps, Slight Overweight Mid Caps, Slight Underweight
Small Caps due to valuations.
- Investors should focus on asset allocation, stagger investments during
volatility, and remain disciplined.
Updated
Investment View
Maintain
diversified exposure across Large Cap, Flexi Cap, Multi Cap and Hybrid strategies.
Use market corrections to gradually increase equity allocation based on
long-term goals. Keep 10% allocation to Gold as a portfolio hedge and maintain
appropriate debt allocation based on investment horizon.
Domestic Flows Continue to Support Markets
One of the
biggest positives for Indian equities is the strength of domestic
participation.
- Systematic
Investment Plans (SIPs) continue to provide stable inflows.
- Domestic
institutional investors have largely offset foreign selling.
- FII outflows
have moderated, helping reduce market volatility.
Key Risks to Watch
Investors
should monitor:
- Escalation of
geopolitical tensions
- Sustained rise
in crude oil prices
- Weak monsoon
impacting inflation
- Corporate
earnings falling short of expectations
- Any significant
tightening in global monetary policy
What Investors Should
Do
In the current environment, investors should avoid making
portfolio decisions based solely on short-term geopolitical events. History
suggests that while geopolitical shocks create volatility, diversified
portfolios generally recover over time.
Equity
- Market‑cap‑to‑GDP
126% →Avoid lumpsum, stagger over 12–20 weeks and buy during the market
correction.
- Interpretation: Markets remain fair valued but justified by
earnings strength, formalization, and financialization of savings.
Valuations require disciplined & staggered deployment.
Preferred themes:
- Multicap,
Midcap & Hybrid funds for stability
- Banking &
Financial & Defence → tactical exposure
- Allocation
towards global equity would add value to the portfolio
- Smallcaps are
still overvalued, it is suggested to buy in a staggared manner through sip
if one has long time horizon.
Debt Market – May 2026
- G-Sec: 10Y benchmark around 6.77% and a 5 Y benchmark around 6.37%
- Context: Inflation and oil risks are the biggest variable. If the inflation
increases, upside pressure on oil price.
Debt Allocation View
- <1 Year: Money Market / Ultra‑Short
Funds
- ~3 Years: high‑quality corporate bonds
- Avoid Credit Risk segment due to
volatility
Gold Outlook
Gold has started
August on a strong footing after recovering from its sharp correction earlier
this year. The recent rally has been supported by easing inflation
expectations, lower oil prices, softer bond yields, and renewed expectations
that the U.S. Federal Reserve could adopt a less aggressive monetary stance.
Allocate 10% to gold
via multi asset, gold funds or Gold ETFs as a geopolitical hedge and rupee
depreciation buffer. Gold's correlation with equities is low, making it a
powerful portfolio diversifier in current conditions.
Accumulate on dips /
corrections: Given volatility and potential short-term pullbacks, using
cost-averaging/SIP-like purchases may smooth entry & mitigate timing risk.
Conclusion
The
consensus view is that while markets may remain volatile in the near term,
India's structural growth story remains intact. Improving earnings, resilient
domestic demand, stable policy support and strong domestic investor
participation continue to provide confidence for long-term investors.
Rather
than reacting to short-term news flow, investors should stay disciplined,
maintain appropriate asset allocation, focus on businesses with sustainable
earnings growth, and use market corrections to gradually build long-term
wealth.
