Painting Useful Practical Tips...

Festivals illustrate the rich cultural heritage of a country & are an integral part of people’s lives in India. Paints have the ability to reflect a person’s personality & play a vital role in healing therapy.

In the festive season everybody wants to give a new look to the house; they want to break free from the boring and the monotonous and give their homes a jovial, colourful appearance matching the spectrum of festivals and setting the mood just right.

These days, the selection of paints is not the sole responsibility of a painter or /  contractor as more & more buyers are taking the decision to pick the right brand for their houses.

As end-consumers are becoming more sensitive to their needs, paint companies are also now focusing on providing paints that propagate healthy living.

A good painting job can add a new dimension to your house. Taking some precautions and following simple procedures can ensure that your walls remain like new for a longer time.

Before Painting..

Check for areas that need to be mended before painting. Any sort of plastering, waterproofing & repairing must be completed before painting. You can also ask your contractor to use a moisture meter to scan wall surfaces and detect dampness left over after the rains.

It is imperative to check wall surfaces for water seepage / or leakage & rectifify them at source by repairing leaking pipes or /  cracks in the exterior walls.

All structural cracks must be opened in a ‘V’ shape and mended with crack fill before painting.

All loose plaster must be removed from the wall.  If you get a hollow sound when you tap on the walls, it indicates loose plaster. Ensure that proper curing time is allowed after repairs so that when re-plastering is done the cracks are bridged and the surface is smooth for painting.

Remove loose particles and paint flakes. Scrape with sandpaper to ensure that the surface is dry and free from dust, dirt or grease.

Fungus affected areas need separate treatment. Make a 5 % to 10 % solution of bleach powder in water and apply on the affected areas with a brush or sponge. Wash the walls with clean water after an interval of 8 to 10 hours. Allow the surface to dry sufficiently.

It is essential to use paints that are ‘lead free’ or /  ‘low or zero VOC’; this will help maintain indoor air quality and keep your family away from the harmful effects of volatile organic compounds.

While Painting..

Before putting on the first coat, all the wall surfaces should be evened using a quality primer/putty.

For the best outcome, apply 2 or /  3 coats of paints rather than one thick coat.

To add sparkle and shine to you home this Diwali, pick any of the following colours:

Bedroom..

A tint bright fuchsia pink with a combination of dusky violet will add the warmth to a bedroom.

Pink & violet being a part of the family of brightest shade, red, evoke a higher level of thought, and take you to the realm of spiritual values.

Living room..

The gateway to an abode creates the feeling of an instant welcome. A luminous orange or / the right shade of yellow can enhance & uplift the hallway.

The glowing quality of the shades help capture our attention & add to a sense of warmth.

Kitchen..

The kitchen being the most used place in a house can be painted in shades of blue, green, red, yellow - in fact, any and every imaginable colour, including the soothing neutrals & whites as there is lot of scope to add punch with different shades.

Blue is cool & refreshing, while green is relaxing & reassuring. White creates the feeling of being airy & clean, using a greyed down version of a paint colour you like will make it pretty and unusual, and you would not get tired of it.

Bathroom..

Natural & neutral shades with undertones of grey create a sophisticated look.

Shades of blue such as ‘ocean cruise’ (a tropical pastel blue) is also highly recommended for the bathroom as blue emphasises the bath as the room of relaxation and retreat.

Most wall paints are washable & can be periodically cleaned with mild soap water solution. For distempered walls, minimum pressure should be applied while cleaning.

Cleaning can be done at least  two (2) weeks after application of the finished coat for removing the dust collected on the surface. Never use water for spot cleaning unless the wall is totally free from extraneous dust.  In case of severe staining, clean the walls immediately before the stain dries up.
