International Mother Language Day - February 21

CMPA Celebrated International Mother Language Day..!

Centre for Media and Public Affairs (CMPA), the Chennai based non partisan body, celebrated 'International Mother Language Day' on February 21, 2013 in Chennai.

On the occasion, Mr. V. Venkat Raj, the President of CMPA, presented Tamil books to students hailing from poor families.

"Democratic nations all over the world celebrate International Mother Language Day on February 21 every year to promote cultural diversity and multilingualism. Languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving our heritage.  As said by Nelson Mandela, if you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head and if you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart. All initiatives to promote the values of mother tongue will certainly encourage linguistic diversity and develop cultural harmony" said Mr B. Nanban, Vice President, CMPA.

"Mother tongue is the language that connects us to our roots. There is no need to give up one's own language to learn some other language. It is the sense of duty of the elders to explain the younger generation about the importance of respecting mother tongue" said CMPA's General Secretary Mr .S .Christopher.

Participants in the event insisted that there should be continued efforts to foster respect for the mother tongue.
