“Sir, I
received a message on WhatsApp. They say that if I invest ₹1 lakh in this stock
now, it will become ₹2 lakh in six months. Is it true?” Arun asked his friend
Ramesh.
“Who sent
you that information?” Ramesh asked.
“I don’t
know. But someone who invested in the stock says they made a good profit!”
“Then don’t
invest your money just yet. First, verify the information,” Ramesh replied.
In today’s
digital world, situations like this have become increasingly common for
investors. While earning returns from investments is important, protecting our money from
misinformation, fraud and impulsive decisions is equally important.
This is
precisely what World
Investor Week 2026 seeks to highlight. The 2026 campaign will
be held from October 5
to 11, with the theme “Investor
Resilience. Digital Deception. Scam Alert.” (NISM)
What is
World Investor Week?
World
Investor Week is a global investor-awareness campaign promoted by the International Organization of
Securities Commissions (IOSCO). Its objective is to increase
awareness about investor education and investor protection and to encourage
people to make informed, responsible and secure investment decisions. (NISM)
In India,
the Securities and
Exchange Board of India (SEBI) leads World Investor Week
activities in collaboration with market institutions and the National Institute of Securities
Markets (NISM). Investor education sessions, webinars and
awareness programmes are being conducted as part of the 2026 campaign. (NISM)
Building
Resilience to Market Ups and Downs
The stock
market does not move in one direction every day. Prices may rise on some days
and fall on others.
During
periods of volatility, some investors may panic and exit their investments,
while others may invest aggressively when markets rise sharply. Both reactions
can affect long-term financial goals.
Therefore,
before investing, investors should understand why they are investing, how long they intend to remain
invested and how much risk they can afford to take.
A clear
financial goal and a suitable asset allocation can help investors stay focused
during market fluctuations.
Is Every
Investment Message Online Genuine?
Investment
information now spreads rapidly through social media, WhatsApp messages, videos
and online groups. However, the speed at which information spreads does not
make it reliable.
Promises
such as “guaranteed
returns,” “no risk,” “invest today,” “exclusive insider information”
or “double your money
quickly” should make investors cautious.
Before
making an investment decision, information should be verified through official
and reliable sources. Investors should also check whether the intermediary or
entity they are dealing with is appropriately registered with the relevant
regulator.
Five Safety
Rules Every Investor Should Follow..!
|
What
Investors Should Watch For |
What
Investors Should Do |
|
Investment information received through social media or
messaging apps |
Verify it through official sources |
|
Promises of unusually high or guaranteed returns |
Treat them as warning signs and investigate carefully |
|
Unknown investment platforms or intermediaries |
Check their registration and credentials |
|
Requests to transfer money urgently |
Stop, verify the details and use only legitimate
payment channels |
|
Suspicious links, websites or apps |
Avoid clicking them and protect your digital
credentials |
Don’t Be
Pressured by “Invest Now!”
A sound
investment decision does not require unnecessary haste.
When someone
presents an investment opportunity, investors should first understand what the
investment is, what risks are involved, when the money can be withdrawn, what
charges apply and how the returns will be taxed.
Most
importantly, not
investing in something you do not understand is also a valid investment
decision.
A Valuable
Lesson for Young Investors
Starting
early can be beneficial for long-term investing. But young investors should
first understand the basics of saving, compounding, inflation, risk,
diversification and asset allocation.
Financial
knowledge is not something that can be learned once and then forgotten.
Investment products, markets, technology and regulations continue to evolve.
Continuous learning is therefore an important part of becoming a responsible
investor.
What Can
Investors Do During World Investor Week?
World
Investor Week can be more than just an awareness campaign. It can also be an
opportunity to review our own financial decisions.
Investors
can review why each investment was made, understand the risks associated with
their holdings and check whether their investments continue to match their
financial goals.
They can
also verify whether any investment has been made based on unverified messages,
social-media recommendations or promises of quick profits.
In India,
NISM is conducting investor education webinars during World Investor Week 2026
on topics including “The
Digital Trap: How Smart Investors Get Deceived,” “REITs & InvITs: What
Every Investor Should Know,” and “The Anatomy of an Investment Scam.”
(NISM)
Knowledge
Is the First Line of Investor Protection
The central
message of World Investor Week is not merely about earning higher returns. It
is also about understanding investments, recognizing risks, protecting personal
financial information and avoiding fraud.
A
financially informed investor is better placed to pause before making an
investment decision, verify information and understand the risks involved.
The message
of World Investor Week can therefore be turned into four simple investor
commitments:
“I
will verify information.
I will understand the risks.
I will not make
investment decisions in haste.
I will stay alert to
scams and protect my money.”
Because in
investing, earning
returns matters—but protecting our hard-earned money and making informed
decisions matter just as much.
