“Suppose
Dad develops diabetes. We would immediately take him to a doctor. If there is a
problem with his mental health, why do we hesitate?” Ramesh asked his wife.
A friend
of Ramesh had been suffering from persistent stress, sleeplessness and anxiety.
However, he kept postponing a visit to a mental health professional. The reason
was a simple doubt: “Will health insurance cover the cost of mental health
treatment?”
This is
not a question faced by Ramesh’s friend alone. With the cost of mental
healthcare increasing, many people want to know: Does health insurance
provide coverage for mental health problems?
Mental Health Is as Important as Physical Health
India’s Mental
Healthcare Act, 2017, provides for equality in access to healthcare
services for persons with mental illness, similar to those available for
physical illnesses. In particular, Section 21 of the Act states that insurers
should make medical insurance available for the treatment of mental illness on
the same basis as treatment for physical illnesses.
Therefore,
completely excluding mental health conditions from health insurance is no
longer an acceptable approach.
The Insurance
Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has also emphasised,
through its health insurance regulations and guidelines, that health insurance
products should provide coverage for mental illness.
Does That Mean All Mental Health Expenses Are
Covered?
This is
where the policy terms and conditions need to be examined carefully.
The fact
that a health insurance policy provides mental health coverage does not mean
that every consultation with a psychiatrist, every medicine expense or every
counselling session will automatically be covered.
Some
policies may cover mental health treatment when the policyholder is admitted to
a hospital. Some may provide coverage for outpatient treatment, psychiatric
consultations, psychological therapy or counselling, subject to the terms of
the policy.
The
extent of coverage depends on the specific policy and its design. Government
information released in 2025 also indicated that several health insurance
products in the market provide coverage for mental illnesses, with the coverage
being subject to the terms and conditions of the respective policy.
What Should You Check?
|
Aspect |
Why Is It Important? |
|
Hospitalisation |
Check
whether inpatient mental health treatment is covered. |
|
Outpatient
Treatment |
Find
out whether consultations with a mental health professional are covered. |
|
Waiting
Period |
Some
mental health conditions or treatments may be subject to a waiting period. |
|
Pre-existing
Conditions |
Check
the policy rules for mental health conditions that existed before buying the
policy. |
|
Sub-limits |
Find
out whether there is a separate limit for particular mental health
treatments. |
|
Hospital
Eligibility |
Check
which hospitals or treatment centres are recognised under the policy. |
Is Insurance Available for Stress Alone?
The terms
“stress”, “anxiety” and “depression” are commonly used in different ways in
everyday life. However, insurers generally consider claims based on medically
diagnosed conditions, medical records and treatment details.
Therefore,
if a person feels that they may be experiencing a mental health problem, it is
important to consult a qualified mental health professional rather than
avoiding treatment.

What Should You Check Before Buying a Policy?
When
buying health insurance, it is not enough to simply ask the agent, “Does this
policy cover mental health treatment?” The mental health-related provisions
in the policy document should be read carefully.
In
particular, check the coverage for hospitalisation, outpatient treatment,
waiting periods, pre-existing conditions, sub-limits and co-payment
requirements.
Anyone
who is already undergoing treatment for a mental health condition should
disclose the relevant information honestly while applying for the policy.
Pay Attention to Your Family’s Mental Health Too
Mental
health problems do not affect people only at a particular age. Children, young
people, middle-aged adults and senior citizens can all experience mental health
issues.
Work-related
stress, family problems and lack of sleep, when continuously ignored, can
worsen the situation.
Therefore,
while selecting health insurance for the family, it is important to look beyond
coverage for physical illnesses and check whether the policy also provides
adequate protection for mental health treatment.
The Key Takeaway
Mental
health is not separate from physical health. Mental health has an important
place in health insurance as well. However, “mental health coverage is
available” should not be interpreted as “all mental health expenses will be
covered.”
Before buying
a health insurance policy, carefully read its terms and understand the coverage
for mental health treatment, waiting periods, outpatient treatment and
applicable limits. This is the safer approach to choosing health insurance.
10 Important Things to
Check in Mental Health Insurance!
1. Is Mental Health Treatment Covered?
First,
check whether the policy clearly includes treatment for mental illnesses within
its coverage.
2. Is Hospitalisation Covered?
If a
person is admitted to a hospital for mental health treatment, check whether the
associated expenses are covered by the insurance policy.
3. Is Outpatient Treatment Covered?
The
coverage for consultations with a mental health professional may differ from
one policy to another. Check the outpatient treatment provisions separately.
4. Are Psychological Counselling Expenses Covered?
Apart
from consultations with a psychiatrist, check whether the policy covers
psychological counselling or therapy expenses.
5. What Is the Waiting Period?
Some treatments
may be subject to a waiting period. It is important to know the applicable
waiting period before purchasing the policy.
6. What Are the Rules for Pre-existing Mental
Health Conditions?
If a
person has already received treatment for a mental health condition before
purchasing the policy, check whether it will be considered a pre-existing
condition and when coverage for it will begin.
7. Is There a Separate Limit for Mental Health
Treatment?
Even if
the overall sum insured is high, check whether the policy imposes a separate
limit or sub-limit on mental health treatment.
8. Are There Co-payment or Other Restrictions?
Check
whether you have to pay a specified percentage of the treatment cost yourself
or whether treatment is restricted to certain hospitals or healthcare
providers.
9. Which Types of Treatment Are Covered?
Check the
policy document to confirm which services are covered, such as psychiatric
consultations, medicines, psychological therapy and hospitalisation.
10. Disclose Medical Information Honestly!
When
purchasing health insurance, failing to disclose an existing illness or ongoing
treatment can create problems during a future claim. Therefore, provide
accurate information about your medical history wherever the application requires
it.
Remember!
Having
mental health coverage is not enough. Before choosing a health insurance
policy, understand exactly which treatments are covered, how much is covered,
when the coverage begins and what conditions apply.
