How to Achieve Financial Freedom? Choose the Right
Financial Path Early in Life!
Yaseen Sahar, Financial Expert
The age of
25 is an important stage in life when many people begin earning and making
major financial decisions. At this age, decisions related to career, marriage,
buying a home, purchasing a car and lifestyle often begin to take shape.
However, if
a person learns to manage money properly at this stage, it can create
significant financial progress over the next 20 to 30 years.
Financial
freedom does not simply mean not having to work. True financial freedom means
building sufficient investment assets and other sources of income to support
the lifestyle you want and meet your future expenses.
The biggest
advantage of starting this journey at the age of 25 is simple: time is on your side.
First,
Clearly Define Your Financial Goals
“I want to
earn a lot of money” is not a financial goal.
A proper
financial goal should clearly answer three questions: How much money do you
need? When will you need it? What is the money needed for?
Goals such
as children’s education, marriage, buying a house and retirement should be
considered separately.
For example,
if a family’s monthly expenses are ₹30,000 today, we should not assume that
₹30,000 will be sufficient 20 or 30 years from now. Inflation must also be
considered while estimating future expenses.
It is
equally important to calculate how much investment wealth will be required in
the future to meet your lifestyle expenses.
The right
path is:
Small
goals → Regular savings → Strong financial foundation → Long-term investments →
Wealth creation
Your
Savings and Investment Rate Matters More Than Your Income
At 25, there
is no need to worry if your salary is not very high. What matters is not only
how much you earn, but also how much you keep aside and invest for yourself.
Instead of
spending first and saving whatever remains, it is better to set aside the
required amount for savings and investments as soon as you receive your income
and then manage your expenses with the balance.
Even saving
10% of your income can be a good beginning. As your income increases, try to
gradually raise your savings rate to 20%, 25%, 30% or more.
At 25, the
important thing is not just the amount you save. It is the habit of saving that matters
most.
How Can You
Allocate Your Monthly Income?
The
following percentages are only general guidelines. There is no single
allocation that works for everyone. Your income, family responsibilities, debts
and financial goals should determine the appropriate allocation.

Emergency fund / Insurance |
As
required |
Once your
emergency fund has been built, the amount previously allocated toward it can
gradually be redirected toward long-term investments.
Build an
Emergency Fund First
An emergency
fund is one of the most important financial safety measures to establish before
taking significant exposure to the stock market.
It can help
you handle situations such as job loss, medical expenses or unexpected family
expenses without having to depend on loans.
As a general
approach, it is useful to maintain an emergency fund equivalent to at least six
months of living expenses in a safe and easily accessible place. Those with
greater family responsibilities may consider keeping enough for nine to twelve
months of expenses.
The purpose
of an emergency fund is not to generate high returns. Its purpose is to provide financial
security when you need money immediately.
Insurance
Is the Foundation of Financial Protection
Many young
people tend to ignore insurance. However, insurance plays an important role in
building a sound financial plan.
Health
insurance can help protect your savings from unexpected medical expenses. If
your family depends on your income, you may consider adequate term life
insurance based on the financial needs of those who depend on you.
At the same
time, it is important to understand that insurance and investment serve two
different purposes.
Insurance
is for protection; investments are for wealth creation.
Make the
Most of Long-Term Investing at a Young Age
One of the
greatest financial advantages a 25-year-old has is time.
With a long
investment horizon, investors may be better positioned to look beyond
short-term market fluctuations and focus on long-term wealth creation.
For
long-term goals, investments such as equity mutual funds may be considered
depending on an individual’s risk-taking ability and financial objectives. A
systematic investment plan, or SIP, can be a useful way to maintain investment
discipline.
However, no
investment should be selected based only on its past returns. Your financial
goal, investment horizon, risk-taking capacity and asset allocation should also
be considered.
How Much
Can a ₹5,000 Monthly Investment Grow?
Suppose a
person starts investing ₹5,000 every month at the age of 25 and continues until
the age of 60, for a total period of 35 years.
For
illustration, if the investment earns an average annual growth rate of 13%, the
investment could grow to approximately
₹2.7 crore at the end of 35 years.
The total
amount actually invested would be only ₹21 lakh.

This is only
a mathematical illustration. A 13% return is not guaranteed in stock-market
investments. Actual returns can vary from year to year.
The key
lesson from this example is the power of investing a small amount consistently
over a long period.
Develop the
Habit of Increasing Your Investment Every Year
One of the
best ways to increase wealth creation is to increase your investment whenever
your income rises.
This
approach is commonly known as a Step-up
SIP.

Accelerate the journey toward financial freedom |
Starting
with ₹5,000 a month is important, but remaining at the same amount for 35 years
is not the objective. As your income increases, your investment should also
increase.
Do Not Make
Debt a Permanent Part of Your Life
At 25, it is
easy to get caught up in car loans, personal loans and credit-card debt when
your salary starts increasing.
Just because
you can afford to buy something does not mean you need to borrow money to buy
it.
High-interest
consumer debt can force you to use your future income for today’s expenses.
This can delay your journey toward financial freedom by several years.
Instead of
increasing your lifestyle at the same pace as your salary, consider directing a
portion of every income increase toward investments.
Do Not
Depend Only on Your Salary; Develop Your Earning Power
Investments
alone are not enough to achieve financial freedom. Increasing your ability to
earn is equally important.
Particularly
between the ages of 25 and 35, you should invest in yourself by learning new
skills, progressing in your career, increasing your professional value and
developing additional sources of income.
In the early
years, your ability to increase your income can be more important than the size
of your initial investment because higher income creates the capacity to invest
more in the future.
An increase
in income does not automatically guarantee wealth. But if the increased income
is systematically saved and invested, it can help you reach financial freedom
faster.
A Simple
Roadmap to Financial Freedom
Anyone who
wants to move toward financial freedom can follow this sequence:
1. Understand and track
your expenses.
2. Build an emergency
fund covering 6–12 months of expenses.
3. Create adequate
health and term life insurance protection.
4. Control high-interest
debt first.
5. Start investing for
long-term financial goals.
6. Increase your
investment amount every year.
7. Continue to increase
your earning capacity.
8. Do not increase your
lifestyle at the same pace as your income.
Together,
these eight steps can help create a strong financial foundation.
Stop
Comparing Yourself With Others
At 25, one
friend may have bought a car. Another may have travelled abroad. Someone else
may have had an expensive wedding.
But we
rarely know the complete financial picture behind someone else’s lifestyle,
including their expenses and debts.
Therefore,
we should not make financial decisions based on the lifestyle we see others
displaying.
“At
25, you do not need to compete with your friends; you need to compete with the
financial needs of your future self at 35.”
True wealth
is not found only in expensive possessions. It is also found in investment
assets that continue to work for you over time.
Financial
Freedom Is Not the Same Number for Everyone
For one
person, ₹50 lakh may be sufficient. For another, ₹5 crore may be necessary.
Why is there
such a difference?
Living
expenses, family responsibilities, future goals, lifestyle and the income
required after retirement can vary significantly from person to person.
Therefore,
before asking, “How much
money do I need?”, ask yourself:
“What
kind of life do I want to live?”
The answer
can help determine the size of your financial goal and the pace at which you
need to invest.
What Is the
Best Investment to Make at Age 25?
Before
asking whether stocks, gold, silver or mutual funds are the best investments,
understand what your biggest asset is at the age of 25.
It
is not money. It is time.
Therefore,
the most important investments you can make at 25 should focus on three areas.
First,
invest in your skills. Continuously increase your ability to earn.
Second,
develop the discipline of saving and investing. Start even if the
amount is small.
Third,
allow time to work in your favour. Consistency and discipline are critical for
long-term investing.
The Bottom
Line
Financial
freedom is not something achieved in a single day. But if you start in the
right direction at 25, increase your income, control your expenses and continue
investing consistently, your chances of building a strong financial foundation
by the age of 40 or 45 can increase significantly.
In one
sentence:
“Spend
less than you earn; invest the surplus consistently; control high-interest
debt; grow your earning power; and let time work in your favour.”
A good
financial habit started at the age of 25 can become one of the greatest gifts
you give yourself for the next 30 years of your life.
