year, across the world, by the securities market regulators.
The week
witnesses a host of investor awareness activities across the globe and the
investors are explained about the importance of investor education and
protection.
This
year, WIW – 2025 is being celebrated in India from October 6 to 12, 2025.
Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is the national coordinator for
celebrating WIW-2025 in India. Investors are invited to participate in various
investor awareness activities like Quiz and other contests, Investor Awareness
Programs, etc.
In 2025, the theme for India is “Fraud and Scams
Prevention and Basics of Investing”.
SEBI Chairman Mr. Tuhin Kanta
Pandey..!
Inaugurating
the World Investor Week 2025 for India, SEBI Chairman Mr Tuhin Kanta Pandey
talked about the dual themes of investor empowerment and fraud prevention. He
urged all stakeholders to strengthen the foundations of trust in India’s
growing securities markets.
The World
Investor Week is a global campaign led by International Organization of
Securities Commissions (IOSCO). India is celebrating this campaign with the
theme: “Fraud and Scams Prevention and Basics of Investing.”
Here are
the key points from the SEBI Chairman’s address;
Rise of retail investors
As of August 31, 2025, there are 13.40 crore unique investors registered in the securities market ecosystem
- 63% of Indian households or about 21.30 crore homes, are aware of at least one securities market product
- But the actual participation stands at 9.5% of households or around 3.20 crore homes
- Highlighting the gap in
awareness and enhanced vulnerability, Pandey said that only 36% of
investors possess high or moderate knowledge of the securities market,
making the rest susceptible to frauds
The
Shadow of Frauds & Scams..!
The SEBI
Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey acknowledged that while digital infrastructure has
democratized access, it has also created fertile ground for fraudsters.
He said
that unsolicited messages on messaging apps, dubious finfluencers and fake
trading apps and websites promise the one
thing that markets can never offer - Guaranteed Returns.
He
pointed out that around 80% of households in India remain risk-averse and the
fraudsters exploit the instinct for safety by disguising high-risk products as
secure investments.

Concluding
the address, Pandey said that the SEBI survey showed 22% of non-investors who
are aware of securities products intend to invest within the next year. While
current participation stands at 15% in urban and 6% in rural India, a vast
untapped pool is waiting to join the markets.
He called
on all market stakeholders to conduct awareness programs at scale, matching
last year’s 2,600 investor awareness events.
