Leather Sector’s Skill Development Program

The Leather Sector Skill Council (LSSC) has been set up under the National Skill Development Corporation to train the unemployed youth for jobs in the Leather Sector. This year, Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation for the first time has approved a Placement Linked Skill Development Training Program for the Leather Footwear and Products vertical for 2000 candidates. Central Footwear Training Institute (CFTI), Guindy is a sixty year old premier Institution that has rendered yeoman service to the footwear industry in Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu is the home of the Leather Industry, with 40% of the Country’s production happening in the Districts of Vellore, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, and Chennai. Footwear and Products made here are exported to all major international brands world-wide. The sector in Tamil Naduprovides employment to about 1.5 million workers. The Leather Sector is a key sector for the ‘Make in India’ campaign of the Prime Minister. The Industry worth US $12 billion is poised for a phenomenal growth with an ambitious target of US $27 billion by 2020.

According to Thiru. M. Rafeeque Ahmed, Chairman, Council for Leather Exports, “There is a big demand for skilled manpower at the shop floors for footwear, garments and product manufacturing in Tamil Nadu. Since Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation has been at the forefront of skilling initiatives for the Manufacturing Sector in Tamil Nadu, we requested them to partner with us and they readily agreed.”

Therefore, for the first time in the history of the Leather Sector, CFTI commenced “Placement linked Entry level training” in the footwear and product verticals.  Giving away certificates to the candidates, Thiru. P. Mohan, Hon’ble Minister for Rural Industries and Labour, Govt. of Tamil Nadu, who was the Chief Guest said, “The $ 12.5 billion leather industry is facing two big challenges - shortage of raw material and manpower. As the centre for manufacturing and especially for the leather sector Tamil Nadu has a continued need for skilled manpower.” Complimenting TNSDC, LSSC and CFTI for the initiative he exhorted the employed candidates to utilise the skills learned and contribute to the further growth of the leather sector in Tamil Nadu. He assured the full support of the Tamil Nadu Govt to the leather sector especially since it provides gainful employment to women.

Mr. Kumar Jayanth, IAS Secretary, Labour and Employment, Govt. of Tamil Nadu, said, “The Placement Linked Skill Development Training Program sponsored by Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation met the twin objectives of livelihood security to the marginalised sections of society by providing gainful employment to the unemployed youth and ensured availability of skill trained manpower at entry level for working in the shop floor which would contribute to productivity. With the standardisation of the National Occupation Standards under the National Skill Qualifications Framework, the workforce should be able to achieve international standards of competence.”
