May Say NO to Tobacco...

Say NO to Tobacco...

World No Tobacco Day - 31 May 2014

In India, tobacco consumption is responsible for half of all the cancers in men and a quarter of all cancers in women, in addition to being a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases.  India also has one of the highest rates of oral cancer in the world, partly attributed to high prevalence of tobacco chewing. Forms of tobacco chewing include pan (piper betel leaf filled with sliced areca nut, lime, catechu, and other spices chewed with or without tobacco), pan-masala or gutkha (a chewable tobacco containing areca nut), and mishri (a powdered tobacco rubbed on the gums as toothpaste). In addition to tobacco chewing, there is also the burden of cigarettes and beedis (mall, cheap, locally-made cigarettes)

The World Health Organization predicts that tobacco deaths in India may exceed 1.5 million annually by 2020.

India needs to kick the habit and now is the time.

Some tips to quit tobacco..

The first most crucial step in quitting any form of tobacco (whether Chewable or Smoking) is firmly believing in the fact that one is addicted to the habit. It needs to be identified as an addiction and that it is harmful to one’s health.

Avoid Triggers..

Anybody who is addicted to the habit has strong triggers that increase the urge to consume tobacco. It may be anything ranging from after consuming a cup of tea/coffee, after consuming lunch, at a party, at a bar, after a meeting and the list of triggers could go on and varies from person to person.

An individual trying to quit must list down the set of triggers and consciously avoid giving in to the urge.

Set a data and start preparing:

The best time to quit is today and now. Often individuals consider quitting seriously but never come around to initiating the process.

It is important to set aside a date and start preparing. Make your own list of ‘reasons to quit’ and keep reminding yourself of it.

Delay an urge..

The best way to avoid an urge to consume tobacco is delaying the process. Give yourself time or keep an alternative like munching on a toffee or chewing a candy. Even drinking a glass of water helps in delaying the urge.

Just one..
Often individuals who have successfully started to quit give in to a urge and consume tobacco just that one time and this leads to consuming it multiple times a day and often the plan to quit goes entirely for a toss. Not giving in to the urge is of utmost importance in quitting the habit completely.

Take help..

Individuals can take help of a doctor/friend/family member to keep track of progress. It helps if he/she is able to talk to someone regarding the habit and actively receive help in quitting.

Physical Exercise and Relaxation techniques:

Brisk walking, stretching exercises running, jogging, yoga and meditation helps you relax and keeps you stress free. Individuals who have successfully quit the habit have asserted that physical activity has greatly helped them in quitting tobacco.

Each time you resist a tobacco craving, you're one step closer to being totally tobacco-free.
