Why the practice of paying on matrimonial sites is fundamentally broken.

Every paid online matrimonial site advertises huge number of registered users. So if someone is looking for a perfect match for him/herself feels that - there is a lot of options to chose from. This makes them register - till they realize that as a FREE user they literally cannot do anything more than just “express-interest” in the matches they are interested in and then get into a endless wait for a reply back from their matches.


Now if you look at it from the other side most of the potential matches that a user has  “expressed-interest” in are also FREE (read Dead as they cannot reply back) members – almost 97-98% or more -  and only a handful of “PAID” members  - 2 to 3% or 1 out of 30 - are someone who can actually reply back  or contact as only PAID members are allowed to message or exchange contact information.

So actually 1/30th of the potential matches that you find on any paid matrimony site is someone a user can potentially talk to – resulting in loss of opportunity, delaying match search and creating anxiety, frustration and disappointment.

This gets even worse when you add to it the fact that when a user sends an “expression-of-interest” in another profile they can expect only about 10-15% acceptance (read mutual like – which means the other party is also interested – this is true for SimplyMarry.com also). So in actual a user can expect (1/30)*(15/100) = 1 in every 200 “expression-of-interest” that he / she send out which is abysmally low.

For example: if you are a Punjabi looking for a match and you find even 1000 relevant profiles for yourself on one of the matrimony site, odds are that you will only be able to talk to 5-6 (1000/200) of the mutual matches only.

This problem gets magnified as the matrimony sites business model creates an incentive for them to show FREE or UNPAID members to other FREE or UNPAID members. When one FREE member “expresses-interest” in another FREE member and if they are mutually interested in each other there is a possibility that one of the two would end up buying a subscription. Remember that the paid matrimonial sites do not make any money when an existing PAID member reaches out to a UNPAID member.
