South Africa E-waste Collection day - 6 April

The e-waste Association of South Africa was proud to announce the first of this year's national e-waste collection day, scheduled for Saturday 6 April 2013. e-waste management companies will ensure that all the waste collected was dismantled, processed and or disposed of in an environmentally sound manner within the eWASA guidelines for e-waste dismantling and recycling.

According to eWASA chairman Mr. Keith Anderson, this year there will be 644 points nationally where the public can drop off e-waste, many of these points are permanent collection points while some will only be operational for the day. It is expected that the planned collection days this year will boost e-waste collection throughout the country.

World-wide e-waste is considered one of the fastest growing waste streams in our fast-paced consumer society. It includes all electronic and electrical equipment i.e. Computer equipment, mobile phones, game consoles, fridges, tumble driers, washing machines, ATMs, TVs, video machines, copiers, stoves, hairdryers, heater, toasters, kettles, chargers, battery-operated toys, and batteries etc...!  In short anything that uses a power cable or / uses a battery.

The waste contains valuable, scarce and hazardous materials and should therefore never be sent to landfill where it could lead to environmental damage. Precious and rare metals can be recovered and used as raw materials again. In a world where resources are dwindling, this is of utmost importance.

The long weekend presents the perfect opportunity to find all your stored and forgotten  e-waste (yes the mobile phones too) and prepare them for drop-off on 6 April. Declutter knowing that the materials will be responsibly managed.
