CONSTRUCTION SECTOR SLOWLY DISSIPATING ?

by K.Venkatachalam, President, Chennai Civil Engineers Association (CHCEA)

The citizens of India have tuned themselves to bear and tolerate any price hike, let it be on single tea of the early morning or petrol / diesel in the dark midnight.

Swallowing all these and without realizing the evil of this
monster, they were able to lead normal & peaceful life. No one seems to be bothered. If at all, when their angst peaks they hold a token fast for a day and then forget the whole episode.

Nobody, either the public or the government, seems to worry about that unless otherwise the situation is close to death like Koodankulam and warrants a crusade.

We know you would be surprised at this point being highlighted here. But realize an era when your dream home is going to remain a dream only is not far away.

Let us discuss the situation we are in. Home buyers can be classified into three categories – low income group, upper income group and middle class. While there is no need to mention about upper class, the
government may take care of lower strata. But the situation of the
middle class is not the same as the other two.

Five year before, a middle class human-being was identified with savings. But the trends have changed totally, that too, with the status of the current set of youth having seen a strategic jump with the globalization and IT growth.

As income grew with this trend, their attitude towards
life has also changed. Many of them have been extravagantly spending on parties and luxuries like vehicles. As a result, their savings have halved.

Adding to the woes is the inflation eating into the meager savings of the youth towards their dream home. It is a pity that the government provides housing for the poor for whom buying gold is a dream while even the housing is going to be a dream like gold for poor.
